Pulau Ketam “Island of Crabs” Tour

Duration: 8 hour(s) - Location: Klang

Participants on this tour will observe the lifestyle of the fishing community at Pulau Ketam and enjoy different crab dishes. They will view the beautiful palace of the Sultan of Selangor, the famous Blue Mosque - also known as Sultan Salahuddin Mosque, and the wonderful Thean Hou Temple.

Pulau Ketam or Crab Island is a small island off the coast of Klang. Port Klang is Malaysia's busiest port. On the ferry ride to Pulau Ketam, participants can observe the busy harbour, and the mangrove swamps of the nearby islands. On approaching the island, visitors will see houses that seem to float on the river. In truth, all houses on this island are built on long wooden stilts. Long years ago, before Pulau Ketam existed, the place was only a mangrove swamp full of crabs, and fishermen had to row all the way from Klang to earn their living. Gradually, they began to build houses on the river to save time and energy. More people began living there, slowly increasing the number of houses and building a small town of their own.

Once on the island, tour participants can visit the Nang Thiam Keng and the Hock Leng Keng Temples, the Kongsi House and First Bridge, as well as the fishing farms. Lunch can be had at one of the many local restaurants on the island.

Back from the island, a visit will be paid to the famous Sultan Salahuddin Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, which is the second largest mosque in Southeast Asia. The tour will then visit Thean Hou Temple, the largest Chinese temple in Southeast Asia. The beauty of the dragon-inspired columns and pagoda rooftops is breathtaking. This temple is dedicated to Thean Hou, Queen of Heaven, the statue of who can be seen upon entering the temple.
