Malacca City Tour
Participants on this tour will visit Malacca, a quiet city by the sea, rich in its cultural heritage. The tour covers various historical sites, from the oldest Christian church to the oldest traditional Chinese temple - offering glimpses of 580 years of history.
Malacca used to be a small fishing village by the sea, but with growing trade between the East and the West and its strategic location facing the Straits of Malacca, it became a major centre for maritime trading. Within 50 years, the small village turned into a hub of international commerce. Through the years, the Portuguese, Dutch and British colonies tried to take control over Malacca, and finally, when Malaysia gained its independence in 1957, Malacca was declared Malaysia's heritage city.
The visit to Malacca will cover St. Peter's Church, which was built by the congregation of Portuguese Catholics in 1710, and is the oldest Catholic Church in Malaysia. Also part of the tour are Bukit China, the Chinese Hill and the largest 17th century Chinese cemetery outside of China; the Sultan's Well, Porta De Santiago, and the ruins of St. Paul's Church; the Red Square, the salmon- pink Dutch administrative building which houses the Malacca Museum and government offices.
The tour will visit the Christ Church before going on to the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the oldest traditional Chinese temple in Malaysia. The structure of the temple conforms to the principles of Feng Shui, the belief that every aspect of life is closely related to attaining perfect harmony with nature. This architectural masterpiece is unlike any other Chinese Temple in Malaysia - the three major doctrines of Chinese beliefs, (Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism) are all found under one roof here.
The tour will end with a visit to Jonker Street, a fascinating place to shop for antiques, wood-carved statues, household products, clothes, accessories and souvenirs.
Participants are picked up from their hotel, and the tour proceeds to Malacca, a two hour drive from Kuala Lumpur. On arrival at Malacca, participants will visit St. Peter's Church, the oldest Christian Church in Malaysia. The tour will pass Chinese Hill on the way to the Sultan's Well and the Portuguese Settlements. There will also be visits to Porta De Santiago, the famous gateway, the ruins of St. Paul's Church, the Red Square and the Christ Church before stopping for lunch and continuing to Cheng Hoon Teng Temple. The visitors can walk along Jonker Street and do some shopping before returning to the hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
